New iconic places in Paris that you can't miss

Hôtel de la Marine, Bourse de Commerce - Fondation Pinault... We're impatiently awaiting these openings, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. In the meantime, here's an overview of these vibrant, social and artistic places that will enhance France's culture and further highlight Paris as the world capital of art.

La Bourse de Commerce - Collection Pinault

After fours years of construction, the Bourse de Commerce, future museum of the Pinault collection, will open on 23rd January 2021. Located in the heart of the Halles district, this emblematic monument to the city of Paris has been completely renovated. The project was entrusted to the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. He imagined a concrete cylinder 30 m (98 ft) in diameter and 9 m (29 ft) high, placed under the canopy to offer visitors a new perspective. The museum, entirely dedicated to contemporary art, will have an "educational and pedagogical vocation." In total, it will be home to more than 3,000 m2 (32,291 ft2) of exhibition space, a restaurant and mediation spots.

The Hôtel de la Marine

After having housed the royal admirals for more than two centuries, the prestigious Hôtel de la Marine is getting a facelift! This metamorphosis has been entrusted to the architect Alain Moatti, and is symbolized by a monumental canopy of 300 m² (3229 ft²), created by English architect Hugh Dutton. Three years of work were needed to transform this emblematic monument on Rue Royale into "the new cultural center of the capital." The opening date, originally planned for summer 2020, has been postponed due to the health crisis. The Hôtel will be home to offices, a bookstore, restaurants, a tea room and shops. The site will also house the headquarters of the foundation to the memory of slavery as well as a long-term (20 years) exhibition of of the 6000 piece collection of Al Thanidu Qatar.

The new Samaritaine

The long awaited reopening of the Samaritaine was to take place in April 2020, but has been postponed to a later date following the health crisis. This Art Deco gem, closed in 2005 for security reasons, has been the subject of almost 15 years of work. Located between Pont Neuf and Rue de Rivoli, this emblematic store in Paris has been owned by LVMH since 2000. Completely redesigned, this new hub for Parisian trade is about to rise from the ashes. In total, a complex of more than 70,000 m² (753,473 ft²) including: a large store of 20,000 m² (215278 ft²), a hotel with 72 rooms, offices, restaurants, social housing as well as a daycare.

La Manufacture de la Mode de Chanel

The prestigious luxury group is thinking big with the 19 M! Located in the northeast of the capital, at the Porte d'Aubervilliers, this building will bring together all luxury crafts in one place. Entrusted to Rudy Riccioti, famous architect who counts the MuCEM in Marseille and the Louvre's Department of Islamic Arts to his credit, the 19 M will be an open and collaborative place where artisans, students and art lovers can meet. On an aesthetic level, the 19 M is an “exostructure” made up of 24 m (78 ft) high white concrete filaments. This is an exoskeleton that recalls the fibers of fabric, the very essence of fashion. Nearly 600 employees will be grouped together in this building of more than 25,000 m² (269,097 ft²), which extends over five levels and two basements. 1,200 m² (12,916 ft²) of exhibition space is also planned. Suppliers of the prestigious luxury brand such as jewelers, bootmakers, embroiderers, glove makers and luxury ready-to-wear brands will also set up shop at the Manufacture de la Mode. No opening date is announced yet.

La Cité des Métiers d’Art et du Design

At the end of 2020, the city of Crafts and Design will open its doors. The Bruneau building, which until 1979 housed the national school of ceramics, was chosen especially for this revitalization program. It will be a highly creative symbolic place, selected to perpetuate precious know-how and unique expertise. Located on Grande Rue, in Sèvres, near the national domain of Saint-Cloud, the future site will extend over 3000 m² (32,291 ft²).

The Cité will consist of two "classified" buildings intended to accommodate artists. The rehabilitation of the site was entrusted to Marie-Suzanne de Ponthaud, chief architect of the historic monuments of Sèvres. This innovative cultural project is based on specific artistic and educational objectives. One is to create an inspiring work environment for all artisans and designers in the Western Paris Region. Another is to promote French know-how to the most wide demographics possible. In total: an exhibition hall and nearly 20 workshops (from 30 to 130 m2)(322 to 1399 ft2) will host around 100 artists.
