Events to commemorate the Centennial of Armistice in France and in Canada

The year 2018 marks the end of a cycle of Great War commemorations and numerous events will be held centered on the Armistice of 11th November.

November 2018
Inauguration of the Gardens of Peace

Developed by the Arts & Jardins Hauts-de-France label in partnership with the 14-18 Centenary Mission, this project is focused on highlighting natural and landscaped spaces through the creation of 15 gardens of peace. They will be established near to the major remembrance sites of the Great War and are unique in that they will each represent one of the nations that look part in World War I. (External link)

From 4th to 9th November 2018
The President of the French Republic’s tour of the battlefields

The President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron will visit "the areas that were ravaged by the War and are nowadays being affected by the financial crisis". This tour through the Grand-Est and Hauts-de-France regions will take a little over five days and will visit ten local departments: Bas-Rhin, Moselle, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Ardennes, Marne, Aisne, Nord, Pas-de-Calais and Somme.

The programme will include visits to the major remembrance sites (the battlefield of Verdun, the cemetery of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette) and venues that have never before hosted the President of the French Republic. An international segment is planned featuring, most notably, a concert at Strasbourg Cathedral on Sunday 4th November.

From 10th to 12th November 2018
Prime Minister of Canada to travel to France

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, announced that he will travel to France from November 10 to 12, 2018, to attend commemoration events for the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice and the first-ever Paris Peace Forum. In response to the rising tensions in today’s world, the Forum is designed to be the annual meeting for projects, ideas and initiatives which effectively contribute to better international cooperation on key global issues, fairer and more equitable globalization and a more effective and legitimate multilateral system.

9th November 2018
Concert at the Franco-German historical centre of Hartmannswillerkopf (Alsace)

Just prior to the ceremonies to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice of the Great War the Franco-German historical centre will host a concert, "Clearing in the Sky, A Remembrance in Song in honour of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day", which will be organised by the Consulate of the United States in partnership with the German and Austrian consulates, as well as the Hartmannswillerkopf National Monument Committee. From 9th to 11th November 2018
The «Compiègne during the Great War» video mapping (Compiègne)

To mark the 14-18 Centenary, discover a video mapping that will be projected onto the town hall of Compiègne to retrace the major events of the Great War that marked this town… It is a touching tribute that is retold in the form of 11 tableaux aimed at bringing together and educating young and old alike on our local and national history in the run-up to the commemorations in November.

Civilian and military ceremony at the Franco-German historical centre of Hartmannswillerkopf (Alsace)

A ceremony for civilians and military personnel will take place on 10th November on the esplanade of the National Monument in the presence of the Consuls General of Germany, Austria and the United States of America. (External link)

The Franco-German ceremony at the Armistice Clearing (Compiègne)

On the afternoon of 10th November 2018, the President of the French Republic, accompanied by the German Chancellor, will preside over a ceremony at the Armistice Clearing in the commune of Compiègne. This ceremony will be defined by the simplicity of a moment of silent reflection and of tribute.

Shell Shock at the Philharmonie (Paris)

Shell Shock - A Requiem of War is a show by Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui that deals with the trauma experienced by the soldiers of the Great War (music by Nicholas Lens, lyrics by Nick Cave). It will take place at the Philharmonie de Paris at 8pm (1,600 seats) in the presence of the President of the French Republic. Foreign dignitaries invited to the ceremonies of the 11th November, French men and women who have been involved with the Centenary and representatives of today’s youth and civilian society will also be in attendance. La Grande Veillée (The Great Vigil)

At night from 10 till 11 of November 2018, the Arras-Pays d'Artois Tourist Office will honour all soldiers who fell during the Great War, within its own territory and beyond, during a popular event of national scope. Bright balls will mark the scale of the gratitude and candles the liveliness of our memory. Numerous events will take place in 240 locations including around Canadian memorials in Bourlon, Guemappe and Mont-Saint-Eloi. (External link)

9am: A ceremony in honour of the Field-Marshals of the Great War at the Hôtel National des Invalides

11am: International ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe

1pm: An official lunch will be hosted at the Elysée Palace in the presence of the President of the French Republic and the foreign dignitaries.

3pm: Opening of the Paris Peace Forum

Ceremony at the Australian National Memorial (Villers-Bretonneux)

The Armistice signed on 11th November 1918 by Germany and the Allies marked the end of the fighting in the First World War. A commemoration, organised by the Australian Department for Veteran Affairs, will take place on 11th November 2018 at 10:30am at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux. (External link)
