The Route du Rhum - destination: Guadeloupe, from Saint-Malo to Point-à-Pitre

On Sunday, November 4th 2018, the 11th edition of the most iconic transatlantic single-handed race shoves off from Saint-Malo, Brittany to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe. The Route du Rhum will celebrate its 40 year anniversary this year.

Head for Point-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe! On Sunday, November 4th 2018, there will be hundreds of skippers taking their places for the 40-year anniversary of the Route du Rhum, held on an unchanged route since its first run in 1978. Against the iconic backdrop of the Mont-Saint-Michel, there will be six classes of multihulls and monohulls on the start line off the Breton haunt of corsairs (think pirate ships).

The ultimate category, featuring the giants of the seas, will compete next to the 60-foot Imoca monohulls and their round the world skippers, the Multi 50 now equipped with foils, or the Class40, combining professional and amateur skippers. It promises to be quite a spectacle!

A 3542-mile race

Every 4 years the Route du Rhum keeps its promises. From Saint-Malo in Brittany to Guadeloupe, it brings together the best sailors for a thrilling 3542-mile race.

From the Mike Birch's success on his little yellow trimaran in the first edition, to the Loïck Peyron's breathtaking 2014 arrival on his giant multihull for the 10th edition (establishing the crossing record of 7 days 15 hours 08 minutes and 32 seconds), through the Florence Arthaud's win in 1990, the Route du Rhum continues to make its mark on spectators' memory.

The 2018 edition will carry the banner in this vein. To get yourself in the mood for the race, visit the 130,000 square foot event's village on the banks of Saint-Malo from October 24th to enjoy the events, entertainments, meetings, visits and nautical parades.
