The Rencontres Photography Exhibition in Arles

The Rencontres exhibition welcomed 125,000 visitors in 2017.

Every summer, the city of Arles beats to the rhythm of its famous festival of photography which this year brings together more than thirty exhibitions.

For its 49th season, the internationally renowned festival invites visitors to take a journey through the ages. With more than thirty exhibitions, the event draws on the past to decipher the present and through photography, demonstrates changes that take place in modern society right before our eyes.

The Rencontres de la Photographie returns to 1968, a year of transformation in France as well as in the United States with the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. The festival also celebrates the publication of photographer Robert Franck’s, The Americans, the book which redefined the path of the photographic road trip.

Must-sees include the photographic work of Matthieu Ricard, who is also a writer and Buddhist monk, who presents, with Contemplation, forty exclusive works in large format black and white, retracing 50 years of life dedicated to spirituality. Picasso enthusiasts will relish the Godard-Picasso-Collage (s) exhibition which illustrates the art of collage common to the painter and the filmmaker.

A program dedicated to children and photography workshops

The Rencontres d'Arles also has exhibitions in nearby Nîmes, Avignon and Marseille. The event, fully bilingual French/English, also offers workshops for children as well as photography courses.

Created in 1970, the annual summer festival, founded by Lucien Clergue, Michel Tournier and Jean-Maurice Rouquette brings together the best of contemporary photographic creation in diverse heritage locations in the city of Arles. Last year, the event welcomed 125,000 visitors.
