Almost 30 years ago, an old object caught the eye of George Stam in the window of an antique dealer. He bought this unusual turtle-shaped perfume bottle in Baccarat crystal designed by Maison Guerlain, which did not have a label, perfume or a box on the Champs-Elysées. It was the beginning of a fabulous collection of perfume bottles, now on display in Baccarat, 50 km (31 miles) from Nancy.

The Le Flacon en majesté, esprit d'une collection exhibition focuses on bottles from 1906 to the 1960s, the golden age of modern perfumery, before it became an industrial trade. The exhibition hints at the future Perfume Bottle Museum in the Pôle Bijoux, located in Baccarat.

The origin of luxury perfumery as we know it today also has its place in the exhibition, shown through some perfume-themed objects from the Age of Enlightenment.

The exhibition will appeal to both perfume and fashion lovers: indeed, the collection presents the close links between designers and perfume, a link which lasted for over a century through dresses and accessories, as well as the many containers that rpresents the "dressing" of the bottles.

The famous glassworks of Grand Est: Lalique, Saint-Louis, Daum

In addition to Baccarat, major pieces from other prestigious manufacturers in the Grand Est are in the pantheon of perfumery in the collection: Lalique, Saint-Louis, Daum and Nancy, a firm that did not survive the crisis of 1929. The collection also consists of limited editions and contemporary special series by prestigious perfumers: Guerlain, Dior, Chanel, Lancôme, Armani, Cartier, Maisons Lalique and Baccarat, among others.

The future Perfume Bottle Museum

Built in 1770 by the intendant of the Bishop of Metz, the castle of Gondrecourt, (which will house the future museum) is a classic sandstone building in the Vosges. It's nestled between the medieval remains of the Tour des Voués, the Gallo-Roman museum about the origins of Hercules, the Pôle Bijou and the crystal museum, on "La Route Touristique des Arts du Feu" (a spot in the Vosges known for artworks forged by fire).

The route planned within the museum presents the techniques as well as the tools associated with the bottles from George Stam's collection, which, due to their large number, will be exhibited by turns. This will allow a regular renewal of the 600 m² (6,458 sq. ft.) of permanent exhibition.
