The Vosges: family outings in lakes and forests

The Vosges mountains are located at the northeastern tip of the country, and reach their highest point at the Grand Ballon, at an altitude of 1424 m. They stretch along the left bank of the Rhine, facing Germany, covering a distance of 250 km.

Offering skiing, hiking, and walks in the woods or along the spectacular ridges, the Vosges are a permanent invitation to enjoy nature. With the resorts of Gérardmer, La Bresse, Xonrupt and Bussang, they are also suited to Nordic and cross-country skiing.

The most wooded mountain range in France

The Vosges hold the record as the most wooded mountain range in France. They are perfect for hiking, with some 15,500 km of footpaths that are well marked-out and maintained. Gentle, rounded slopes and moderate altitute provide hikers with varying levels of difficulty, so that there is something for everyone.

In summer, the many lakes are great for recreational and water activities, best in areas such as Gérardmer and Longemer.Along the peaks, the famous "Route des Crêtes", or Ridgeway, marking the border between Lorraine and Alsace, is ideal for cycling or motorcycling. On the Alsace side, the steeper slopes and often rocky faces lend themselves perfectly to rock climbing.
