Stay in a castle

France as a country is full of castles: the best known ones have rich histories, notable architecture and the royal allure of Chenonceau, Versailles, Amboise, Chambord and more.

But besides the most famous names, castles and manors are actually dispersed all throughout France, some of which have been transformed into hotels, B&Bs and holiday rentals.

Whether in the heart of the Loire Valley, in the Beaujolais vineyard or by the seaside in Provence, there's an ideal "chateau" for all tastes.

Here's our selection of some of France's finest castle accomodations, listed by region.

Loire Valley

The Chateau de Breuil overlooks the picturesque valley of the Indrois River, near a flowery village. You can rent a wing of the castle, which offers accommodation for 8 to 14 people.

In an idyllic setting, this wing is the oldest part of the castle, allowing guests to be transported back in time. The castle is nestled in a 45 hectare estate full of greenery and flowers. 

  • Château de Gizeux

The largest currently inhabited home in Touraine Loire Valley invites you to discover its classified architectural heritage. The Laffon family welcomes visitors in 5 guest rooms for a stay in their historical property.

Table d'hote meals are served by candlelight at individual tables in one of the private dining rooms. Family-style cuisine is prepared with seasonal and local products.

Located between Tours and Blois, this 4-star hotel at the foot of a castle offers guests an exceptional view of the Loire Valley.

  • The Château de la Messardière*****

  • Château de Pizay****

The Château de Pizay, 45 minutes from Lyon and 30 from Mâcon in the heart of Beaujolais wine country, was built between the 11th and 15th century and is the ideal spot for a truly peaceful stay.

The Estate brings together the finest wines in the region: Beaujolais Rouge, Morgon, Régnié, Beaujolais Blanc, Brouilly Château de Saint Lager.

The hotel offers 48 duplex suites and 14 rooms.

  • Château Chavagnac - Gîtes and guest rooms

The Château Chavagnac comprises 2 gîtes (holiday cottages) and 3 guest rooms in a charming setting, nestled in the rolling hills of Ardèche and in the heart of the Rhône wine country.

  • Château d'Ygrande****

Located north of Auvergne close to the Tronçais forest in Allier, the Château d’Ygrande sits on a hillside dominating a 40-hectare park

Surrounded by gardens, woodlands and a pond, the castle guarantees its guests peace and quiet. Each of its 19 rooms is uniquely decorated in a vintage style.


  • Château de Vault de Lugny*****

Built between the 12th and 17th centuries, the Château de Vault de Lugny is now a 5-star hotel ideally located between Paris and Geneva and close to the Chablis vineyard Vézelay and the Fontenay Abbey, both of which are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
