La Saint-Nicolas in Nancy
In Eastern France, the two biggest festive events in the winter calendar are the Christmas market in Strasbourg and the Saint-Nicolas festival in Nancy.
The Saint-Nicolas festival is a traditional event typical of the Lorraine region which is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm. Although the saint’s day officially falls on 6 December, the Fête de Saint-Nicolas fully merits the two days of festivities set aside for it during the first weekend in December every year, when the city’s streets are taken over by a sense of celebration with parades, floats, music, fireworks and sweets galore. Every year, a different theme relating to a page in the history of the Lorraine region is chosen as the theme of the festival.
A key part of the traditions and legends of Lorraine, the Saint-Nicolas festival in Nancy is a festival not to be missed. This period of festivities also provides the perfect opportunity to visit the city’s Christmas market with its numerous arts and crafts stalls.
