This year, the Carnival of Granville is about to celebrate its 140th birthday, offering visitors an incredible experience!
Over 100,000 people are expected in Granville for the town’s famous carnival, which is the oldest and biggest event of its kind in Normandy.
The tradition began in the 1870s when local sailors prepared to travel to fishing grounds off Newfoundland, around Shrove Tuesday. The whole community joined them in five days of festivities ahead of the long and difficult crossing.
Nowadays, the event opens with a free concert on the Friday evening. Other highlights include a children’s parade and ball with fancy-dress competition, illuminations, fireworks, floats, live music, confetti and a fairground, culminating in a huge street party with groups playing live music throughout the streets.
