Rendez-vous in Usson Usson fr

East of Issoire, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme bordering the Livradois-Forez Natural Regional Park, Usson is one of the department's four villages classified among France's Most Beautiful Villages.

Clinging to a rocky peak, Usson reaches an altitude of 600 meters. The village and its black stone wine-growers' homes were once dominated by one of the kingdom's most important fortresses, which was also the place of exile of Queen Margot (the first wife of King Henry IV) for 19 years.

Like many others in the region, Usson's castle was demolished under the reign of Richelieu. But behind its walls, the remains of the village's former enclosures can be found, as well as lovely 15th and 16th century homes and a Romanesque church, from which a footpath will take you to the village's basalt column's and the top of the hill.

Walking through Usson's streets, you can admire its traditional architecture and a remarkable view of the Auvergne countryside.
