Rendez-vous in La Roque-Gageac 24250 La Roque Gageac fr

The village of Roque-Gageac, one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, is tucked between Dordogne and a cliff. The area has been inhabited since the prehistoric era, as evidenced through the carved stones found in its fields and gardens.

The village's houses are characterized by white and ochre façades with brown rooftops and narrow alleyways can be found leading to the foot of the cliff, a point which offers a stunning view of the river.

The south-facing village enjoys a micro-climate favorable to the growth of mediterranean and tropical plants along its streets.

Not to be missed

The best way to explore the village's river is aboard one of its well-known barges, the traditional flat-bottomed boats once used to carry goods along the Dordogne.

Strolling around the village, here are some of the highlights you will stumble upon:

  • The Tarde manor, a relic of the Renaissance, continues to dominate the silhouette of the village, particularly with its elegant turrets.
  • The Malartrie castle, lying at the entrance to the village coming from Beynac, originally dates back to the 19th century but was built in 15th century-style with respect to the local architecture. It was built for Saint-Aulaire, an ambassador of France.
  • Next to the church located midway up the cliff you can find an amazing exotic garden with palm trees, banana trees, agave, prickly pear, cactus, and bamboo.

In the surrounding area

  • The grottos of Lascaux II: this famous prehistoric grotto is located 200 meters from the original. Technological prowess and scientific precision have allowed for the atmosphere of the original cavity to be recreated, breathing new life into the world's most famous paleolithic sanctuary.
  • Proumeyssac chasm:this immense underground vault, whose walls are adorned with exceptionally dense crystallizations, is easily accessible by way of a tunnel.
  • The troglodyte village of La Madeleine: this highly authentic site is one of the best examples of the long tradition of human occupation of the Vézère Valley.
  • Gardens of Eyrignac Manor: classified as Historical Monuments of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these aer undoubtedly the most beautiful gardens in Perigord.
