Rendez-vous in Epernay
The first visit of the Tour to Épernay was back in 1963 for the start of the 50th edition.
Despite the flat roads, Federico Bahamontes immediately attacked and distanced his main rivals by close to 1'30.
Enough to worry Anquetil who had crashed early in the stage, but not quite good enough to stop the Frenchman from conquering a fourth crown.
On that day, Eddy Pauwels had captured both the stage win and the overall lead. For the last two starts in Épernay, the stages finished off with bunched sprints won by Mark Cavendish in Montargis (2010), and then by young Peter Sagan in Metz (2012).
- Théâtre Gabrielle-Dorziat (Italian-style theatre registered as an historic monument),
- Theatres/playhouses (Le Millesium, le Palais des Fêtes).
