Opening hours :

  • On weekdays:  banks are usually open from 9am to 5 :30pm, and may close a few hours at lunch time.
  • Some banks are open on Saturday morning, in which case they are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
  • Traveller's check are safe to use but are less and less in favour. It may prove time consuming to exchange them. They are not always accepted in payment, even when they are in euros, and banks take a commission to exchange them.
  • Exchange offices and banks usually take at least a 1% commission, otherwise, the exchange rate is less attractive.

It’s possible to exchange money at some banks or post offices, and in exchange offices, which can be found in department stores, train stations, airports and near tourist sites. Make sure you pay attention to the amount of the commission, which must be clearly displayed.

    Bank cards :
  • Credit cards : they are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, stores, generally for a minimum charge of 15 euros.  ATM machines accept Visa and Mastercard and are connected to the «  Cirrus » or « Plus » network.
You can also use your American Express credit card to withdraw from some ATM machines, usually located in large cities.
  • Debit cards : they can be used to withdraw money from the ATM, but cannot be used as a form of payment.

A 4 or 5 digit PIN code number is needed to use the debit or credit card, but no letter.

For your own safety, it’s best to advice your bank of your travel plans in advance, in order to avoid having your cards blocked.
